Byrnes named Player of the Week by Hockey East

Posted: Monday, October 25, 2004 1:16 pm EDT

WAKEFIELD, Mass.-- Sophomore forward Matt Byrnes (Lincoln, R.I.) was named as the Hockey East "CCM Hockey" Player of the Week for the week ending October 24, 2004.

Byrnes had five points in Merrimack's weekend split with Wayne State, including a career high four-point night (all assists) as the Warriors came from behind for a 5-4 win on Sat. Oct. 23. He set up five of Merrimack's six goals on the weekend.

Byrnes leads Merrimack in scoring with a goal and seven assists for eight points in five games.

Named to the Hockey East Honor Roll as runners-up for weekly awards were sophomore defenseman Jeff Caron (Moncton, N.B.) and junior defenseman and captain Bryan Schmidt (Bloomington, Minn.). Caron had three assists in the win over Wayne State, while the same night, Schmidt scored two goals, including the game-winner, and set up a third with all three points coming within a span of 4:17 in the third period.
