WAKEFIELD, Mass.-- Sophomore forward Mike Alexiou (Pickering, Ont.) was named as the CCM Hockey Player of the Week by Hockey East for the week ending November 28, 2004.
Alexiou led Merrimack to the championship of the Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Pot Tournament on Nov. 27-28, scoring three goals over the two games to receive honors as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. In the Warriors' first round game against Union, Alexiou kept Merrimack alive with a second period goal just :31 after the Dutchmen had taken a commanding 4-1 lead. The Warriors responded with two more to tie the game, 4-4, and won a shootout to advance to the final.
The next night, Alexiou scored twice, including the game winner, as the Warriors captured the championship with a 5-2 win over host Providence. He scored a power play goal off a rebound with just :04 left in the second period to regain the lead for Merrimack, 3-2, after the Friars had roared back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game with two goals in the period. Alexiou then added insurance at 8:34 of the third with another power play tally.
Through 14 games, Alexiou is tied for the team lead in scoring for Merrimack with 13 points on eight goals and five assists. He has already bested his rookie year in all categories, when he scored three goals and added two assist for five points in 25 games. Alexiou is also tied for the team lead in power play goals with six.
Three other Warriors were also honored with selections to the Hockey East Honor Roll: junior defenseman and captain Bryan Schmidt (Bloomington, Minn.), sophomore forward Jordan Black (Canton, Mich.) and sophomore goaltender Jim Healey (Holyrood, Newfoundland). All were named to the Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Pot All-Tournament Team as the Warriors captured four of the six spots. Schmidt scored the game-tying goal in the third period against Union and won the shootout on the last shot with a goal, then set up Alexiou's winner against Providence. Black scored a goal each night and also added an assist in the championship game. Healey stopped 34 of 36 in the championship game, including all 18 he faced in the third period, and also stopped four of five in the shootout against Union after turning away 16 of 17 from the second period on while the Warriors forged their comeback.
Merrimack returns to action Friday and Saturday at No. 10 Maine. Game time each night is 7:00 p.m.
