WAKEFIELD, Mass.-- Sophomore defenseman Jeff Caron (Moncton, N.B.) was named as the CCM Hockey Player of the Week by Hockey East for the week ending December 26, 2004.
Caron had four assists in Merrimack's 6-4 upset of No. 10/11 Harvard in the third-place game of the Dodge Holiday Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. He anchored a Warrior power play that scored on four of five chances in that game, as all of Caron's four assists came with the man advantage. Caron also helped the Warriors keep Harvard's fourth ranked power play scoreless in four tries.
With five assists in the tournament, including one in Merrimack's 6-2 loss to No. 1 Minnesota, Caron was named to the All-Tournament Team. He led all players in assists and points.
Caron ranks as the second leading scoring defenseman in the nation with three goals and 16 assists for 19 points.
Also, freshman forward Mike Fournier (Anchorage, Alaska) was named as the Hockey East Rookie of the Week after scoring in each of the two Classic games. They were his first two collegiate goals and points. Fournier's goal against Harvard came on the power play late in the second period to regain a two goal lead for Merrimack at 3-1 and set the stage for the Warriors to go on to the upset win.
Merrimack returns to action on Thur. Dec. 30 against Brown in the UConn Hockey Classic. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
