Schmidt named Hockey East Player of the Month

Posted: Monday, January 3, 2005 4:31 pm EST

WAKEFIELD, Mass.-- Junior defenseman and captain Bryan Schmidt (Bloomington, Minn.) was named as the CCM Hockey Player of the Month by Hockey East for December 2004.

Schmidt scored five goals and set up five more for ten points in eight games during December. He helped Merrimack to a 4-3-1 record over that stretch, including a win and a tie against teams ranked in the top ten nationally.

After a goal in the Warriors' 2-2 tie at then-No. 9 Maine on Dec. 3, Schmidt scored twice and added two assists as Merrimack edged Princeton, 4-3, on Dec. 10. His goal with 8.6 seconds left in regulation was the game winner.

Merrimack upset No. 10 Harvard, 6-4, on Dec. 23 behind a goal and two assists from Schmidt. He then added a goal and an assist in the Warriors' 4-1 win at Connecticut on Dec. 31.

Schmidt leads all NCAA Division I defensemen in scoring with 11 goals and 23 points. He is tied for the lead in overall scoring in Hockey East among all players.

The runners-up for Player of the Month were New Hampshire senior forward Sean Collins (5 GP, 3-7--10 +8) and Boston University junior forward Brad Zancanaro (4 GP, 5-2--7 +9).

The ITECH Goaltender of the Month in Hockey East for December was BU sophomore John Curry (4-0-0, 1.25, .947), with Northeastern senior Keni Gibson (0-2-1, 1.59, .945) and Massachusetts-Lowell freshman Peter Vetri (3-0-1, 1.96, .929) as runners-up.

Vetri was the league's Superskills Rookie of the Month, backed up by Massachusetts forward Matt Burto (5 GP, 4-1--5) and BU forward Peter MacArthur (4 GP, 3-2--5).
