Overdue Thanks

Since I'm much overdue in doing so and Mike Machnik's own note prompted me, I want to say how grateful I am both to him and to Mike McMahon for the online coverage of Merrimack College hockey that I've been able to enjoy for the past few years.

I've been out of the country nearly full-time for the past decade or so. The last season I was able to attend games regularly was Coach Anderson's last year and then Coach Serino's first. In those past ten years, often times there wasn't much to be excited about, and I was able to attend only a handful of games in person. Due to the tireless efforts of Machnick and McMahon, I haven't felt any further away from Volpe than I would have anywhere in the US, and for that I'm grateful. While the playoff loss to BU still stings, it was great to be able to hear the Internet broadcast from Agganis and to read the liveblog updates from Mike and others.

I also have to admit to a fair amount of jealousy, especially where McMahon's work is concerned. When I was at the Merrimack college paper, our first year we didn't even have a computer! Getting decent action shots of games at Volpe with the equipment we could afford (and the rink's lighting at the time) was a real challenge. Publishing every two weeks, it was always an open question as to whether or not anybody but those on the team would be interested in reading as much as I wanted to write about games that were two weeks old-- and given how tough some of those years were, I think it's an open question whether the players wanted to, either. The idea of being able to write coverage and have it appear the next morning-- let alone that very instant, to hundreds or thousands of people, was nearly unthinkable. We didn't have a website-- most people didn't know what one was. We didn't even have a gopher site. I think we opened an email account before I graduated, but I'm not sure if we ever used it. I don't think we ever received anything through it.

Over three years I taped hours of (badly conducted) interviews with Hockey East players and coaches, but no one ever heard them but me-- for which I should perhaps be grateful! However I think it's fantastic that Mike's podcast exists so I can hear from today's players and coaches shortly after each game. Seeing the team compete and seeing how today's technology has so thoroughly altered how those things are done makes me wish more than a little bit that I could go back to school and do those things over. That's impossible, but at least I have MikeM's podcast and Mike McMahon's blog as consolation. Thanks to you both.

Thanks guys, the feedback has definitely been very positive and I appreciate it. Thanks should also go to the entire staff and players who have been great with their time.

Maybe 2/3 of the way through the season, I was chatting with one of the radio guys from the other team and talking about the things we do. He said he thought the postgame interviews had to be difficult when the game wasn't a good one (for MC). I said not at all, perhaps at some places they can be difficult right in the aftermath of a tough game, but not here, everyone has been nothing short of terrific and very accommodating, answering every last question.

I don't think I knew at the start in North Dakota that it was going to be a nightly thing, but it turned out that way and worked out well I thought. John Leahy, for example, does a great job in the pregame radio interviews with Mark, and the idea was maybe we could add something by bringing people postgame thoughts too.

And since I mentioned John, I have to give him a tremendous amount of thanks for being so welcoming to me this year and being so great to work with. He does a very professional, outstanding job, is so well prepared and very easy to work with. I was particularly glad that he got to call a lot of very exciting games -- and wins -- this season. I have a lot of respect for the other radio guys around the league, and getting to hear John first hand every night and watching him work up close, I think he is certainly one of the best ones out there.

I also have to give a lot of thanks to Mike McMahon, who works so hard and tirelessly. I don't think there is a better beat writer among the league teams. Mike has embraced the "new media" right from the get go with his blog and audio/video work. He goes above and beyond the call of duty with everything he does.

I've been very impressed with the job that everyone in athletics has done this year, getting a chance to see it on a game by game basis this season. I go back a number of years and I don't think overall it has ever been better than I saw it this year. There are a lot of people working very hard to make everything as good as it can be, and also always looking for ways to keep improving. That is what you need. I don't want to run the risk of forgetting anyone, but one person I do want to mention is SID Brad Davis. We wouldn't be able to do what we do if not for him. I have a huge email folder full of all kinds of information that Brad sent us over the season. He does such a terrific job promoting the program and getting us anything we need and ask for. He and his staff deserve a lot of thanks from everyone.

Overall it is a great team effort, everyone doing their part and then some, and I'm just glad to be part of it and that it helps to keep so many people connected with the program. I definitely encourage people to contact AD Glenn Hofmann and let him know the great job he and his staff are doing. Too often people don't hear about the good things, only when something's wrong, but there are certainly a lot of good things going on these days.

Second that Icewolf,

Mike, I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these podcasts--it gives us all great incite and reactions into the team that you can't get anywhere else.

Thanks for your great work all season long!

Postgame Podcast

I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to Mike for all of the hard work that he has put into this past season. I am sure that there are many, many Merrimack supporters who would echo this sediment and I believe that his contribution should be recognized as an integral part of what the hockey program achieved this year. As a fan, one who can not attend many games, I really enjoyed Mike's efforts in providing we spectators with another dimension which enabled us to feel like we were intimately involved. Thank you very much Mike.
